"That's great and all, but why not cotton?"
The reasons we didn't cotton are pretty simple:
1. Cotton has no sports qualities. It doesn't dry quickly, is not breathable, holds onto odor, and has none of the other sports characteristics we'd want in a sports tank top.
2. Cotton requires a ton of water to grow (~2700L/tank top),
3. Last but not least, a lot of toxic pesticides are used in the growing of cotton which have negative health effects on the user very similar to polyester (increased risk of cancer, hormone disruption, fertility and developmental issues, skin irritation, etc.)
